Who Am I
I am an aspiring news media journalist from the small town of Gardendale, Alabama, located about eleven miles north of Birmingham. I am currently a freshman at the University of Alabama, and I am so happy to be attending my dream school. I plan to graduate in May 2029 and expand my skills as a storyteller and media creator while at the University of Alabama
I have a passion for telling human-interest stories, especially those that discuss athletes’ mental health, veterans, and sexism in sports. I first became interested in journalism when I was a senior in high school, when I started reading daily announcements at school and weekly updates at my church. These experiences created a desire in me to inform people with honest, trustworthy, and interesting news, as well as listening to my dad complain about our local and national news reporting.
My experiences include serving as one of two student photographers for all my high school events. I created videos and graphics for our social media pages to help boost student engagement beyond just football and basketball games. I am a brand ambassador for Bubble Skincare and created my own TikTok content video. I truly believe that television broadcasting can have an immediate impact with sharing stories. However, I am also excited to explore how blogs, photography, and documentaries can be used to share stories that people will find interesting.
I see journalism as more than a career. I see it as my way of being a positive role model and making a real difference. My goal is to become a trusted voice in media, someone people can always count on. That is why my tagline is #KountOnKayla-For news you can trust and stories that make a difference!
